The plain-English guide
How AI changed the way customers find businesses
Ten minutes, no jargon, no tech knowledge needed. Use the arrows or arrow keys to move through.
01 · The big shift
Search is no longer ten blue links
The old world: Google gives you a list of links and you do the reading. The new world: you ask ChatGPT, Grok or Claude a full question and get a direct answer that names specific businesses. More and more customers ask the AI for a recommendation instead of searching the old way.
The AI names a shortlist. The shortlist is the whole game.
02 · The numbers
This is already happening
37% of people who use AI tools now start their searches there, not on Google (Eight Oh Two study, 2026).
68% of Google searches in the US end without a single click (SparkToro, measured 2026).
AI referrals to websites grew 357% in a year (Similarweb data, June 2025).
And visitors who arrive from an AI answer convert at 4.4 times the rate of traditional search visitors (Semrush study), because the AI already made the recommendation.
03 · The name
This work is called GEO
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. In plain words: making sure AI tools like ChatGPT, Grok and Claude actually mention and recommend your business. Three parts:
04 · GEO vs SEO
You know SEO. GEO is the new layer on top.
SEO
SEO gets you ranked in a list of links on Google.
Success in SEO looks like clicks.
GEO
GEO gets you named inside the answer itself on ChatGPT, Grok and Claude.
Success in GEO looks like the AI saying your name.
You still need SEO. GEO is what almost nobody in your category is doing yet.
05 · Under the hood
How the AI decides who to name
1. Customer asks
Step one: a customer asks a question.
2. AI reads trusted sources
Step two: the AI searches the live web and reads a handful of sources it trusts, like directories, review sites and forums.
3. AI picks businesses
Step three: it picks a few businesses those sources support.
4. AI names them in the answer
Step four: it writes an answer and names them.
GEO is the work of becoming one of the businesses it names.
06 · Made concrete
What the difference actually looks like
A customer asks: who should I hire in my town?
Without GEO, the answer names your competitors, or nobody.
With GEO, your name appears with a short positive description drawn from sources the AI trusts.
One line in an AI answer is read by someone ready to buy. A page-two Google ranking is read by almost nobody.
07 · A real measurement
The same business gets different answers on different engines
We measured a real firm across three engines on the same day. Grok recommended it in six of six answers. Claude in four of six. ChatGPT in two of six. Same firm, same day, a 49-point spread. Each engine reads different sources, so each needs slightly different homework. You cannot know your numbers until you measure them.
One real firm, three engines, same day.
08 · What it means for you
Why a business owner should care
Visibility where customers are actually looking. Warmer leads, because the AI pre-sold you before the click. A head start while competitors ignore this. And the same work that makes AI trust you, like clear pages and consistent information, helps the rest of your marketing too.
09 · The building blocks
What the work actually is
Five things, none of which require you to become technical.
Clear answer-style pages on your site.
Consistent business information everywhere online.
Mentions on sites the engines trust.
Machine-readable labels so the AI can read your pages.
And regular measurement of what the engines actually say.
Clarity and consistency, done repeatedly.
10 · Your part
A few things only an owner can do
No magic buttons here.
Reviews on the specific platforms the engines read for your category.
A claimed, current Google Business Profile.
And for Grok especially: a real presence on X, because Grok draws its answers from activity there.
We tell you exactly which of these matter for your business, and we handle the rest.
11 · Honesty first
What nobody can promise you
Nobody controls AI answers, and they change. Anyone guaranteeing you a ranking is selling something else. What can be promised: specific verifiable work delivered every month, and honest measurement that shows whether your visibility moved. When it has not moved yet, the report should say so. Ours does.
12 · Getting started
Three steps, the first one free
One: see where you stand. Our free scan asks ChatGPT, Grok and Claude the questions your buyers ask and shows you every answer.
Two: fix the basics so the engines can read and trust you.
Three: build ongoing presence so you stay recommended.
You do not have to figure any of this out alone.
